Company Profile Highlights Financial Highlights Scope of Report Focus on the Future Letter from the CEO How to Use This Report

Sunoco takes seriously its corporate responsibility in matters concerning the environmental impact of its operations. Numerous programs, procedures and a variety of equipment are used to maintain and improve our environmental performance. Examples of these in 2009 are:

Haverhill LDAR Program Improvements
In 2009, the Haverhill Phenol site started several voluntary initiatives to reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds from process equipment leaks.  One initiative that goes beyond what the Federal regulations require involves Haverhill’s Leak Detection and Repair program. The Haverhill Plant adopted a leak action level to perform repairs that is 50% lower than Federal Standards.  Haverhill also uses a repair regimen for when leaks are found that is more stringent than the 15 days allowed by law.   Essentially this boils down to fix smaller leaks, and fix them faster.

Neal Flare Stream
Sunoco voluntarily initiated a project in 2009 to install an on-line gas chromatograph analyzer and flow meter in the Neal Plant flare stream. The analyzer will provide data to better quantify, identify, and reduce losses of propylene, propane, and nitrogen to the flare system, thereby reducing emissions and saving money.

Although the system is not required by Federal or State environmental regulations, it will greatly enhance the plants ability to comply with current requirements.  For example, currently the plant is required by regulation, to maintain a net heating value of 300 Btu/scf at the flare.  In the past, the Neal plant had to estimate and manually feed excess Natural Gas to the Flare on a periodic basis to stay safely above this limit, sometimes wasting natural gas.  The new system will allow automatic control of the proper amount of Natural Gas feed, thus saving Natural Gas and reducing emissions.
