Managing Hazardous Waste
The Refinery Hazardous Waste table shows the amount of hazardous waste excluding wastewater treated on-site. Refinery hazardous waste is broken out into:
  • Total = routine wastes + includes wastes generated from special projects, unit shut downs or other non-routine activities.
  • Routine waste - covers normal refinery operations.

The higher Total Waste numbers in 2006 were due to high disposal of catalyst and storage tank bottoms.

Refinery Hazardous Wastes
  • A majority of the waste (76.0 percent) consists of water and oil that are removed onsite and either treated in wastewater treatment plants or recycled through the refinery oil system.
  • A small percentage of refinery waste is either incinerated off-site (0.2 percent) or treated offsite (0.1 percent).
Chemical Plant Hazardous Wastes
  • Differ from refinery wastes as the majority has a high energy value or high BTU residues generated by the production processes.
  • These wastes are recycled onsite as fuel for industrial boilers or at an offsite location.
  • Majority (97.7 percent) of waste generated at chemical plants in 2008 was recycled on-site in facility boilers.
  • Main off-site waste management for the chemical plants was incineration (0.7 percent).

Assessments
Sunoco conducts assessments of third-party waste transport, treatment and disposal facilities.

Third-party waste transport, treatment and disposal facility assessments
Total sites on Sunoco's master list Approx. 300
New sites audited in 2008 15
Previously audited sites (re-audited in 2008) 25
Total sites audited in 2008 40

Sunoco has an Environmental Standard for Use of Off-Site Laboratories requiring all Sunoco Operating Units to ensure they are using an approved laboratory for off-site testing of wastewater, waste, groundwater, soils and air samples. Currently there are approximately 60 laboratories on the approved list.
