Transportation Emergency Response Training
The Sunoco Transportation Incident Response Specialist (TIRS) Group conducted transportation emergency response training at the U.S. Department of Transportation Technology Center (TTC) in Pueblo, CO July 21-24, 2008. The TIRS Group consists of seventeen Sunoco employees from our chemicals facilities in Bayport, La Porte, Frankford, Mellon Bank headquarters, Pittsburgh and our refineries in Marcus Hook, Philadelphia, Toledo and Tulsa.

The primary job responsibilities for TIRS Group members include facility emergency response, security, health / safety, and transportation. During the training week at TTC, the TIRS members trained alongside transportation safety / emergency response professionals from several railroads (BNSF, Conrail, NS and UP), a key transport carrier for Sunoco (Quality Distribution) and Sunoco transportation emergency response contractors (Eagle Environmental, NewAlta, React Environmental and SPSI).

The training week was divided between classroom training and field exercises. Classroom training included the following training modules:

  • Incident Command
  • Grounding and Bonding
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Monitoring Devices
  • General Purpose and Pressure Tank Cars
  • Cargo Tanks
  • Damage Assessment
  • Incident Reviews
  • Sunoco NAR Reduction Program

The hands-on field exercises involved team responses to cargo tank, tank car and van trailer transportation emergencies involving Sunoco manufactured products.
