Training New Operators and Maintenance Personnel The Toledo Refinery held two training classes in the fall of 2005 for newly hired maintenance personnel and unit operators. The maintenance personnel attended a two-week orientation prior to receiving assignments. The 10 new unit operators began a five week basic training class. The five weeks consist of a one week orientation and then four weeks of equipment training. Each apprentice must pass a written test before moving on to 30 days of hands-on training.
Following the hands-on training, the apprentices begin several weeks of training on procedures pertaining to start-up and shutdown operations, emergency activities, permit writing, and gas testing among others. Once this is completed they are assigned to a specific plant in the refinery where they learn various jobs over the next three years.
