Sunoco experienced a second year of increasing employee safety rates, following our best year ever in 2006 (an OSHA recordable rate of 1.06). The OSHA recordable rate for 2008 was 1.44 compared with 1.28 in 2007, a 12.5% increase.

Refining & Supply
The Refining & Supply business unit improved its OSHA recordable rate by 30.9% (0.56 vs. 0.81 in 2007) and the refineries' combined rate was 0.58 vs. 0.84 in 2007.

Retail Marketing
Retail Marketing's performance declined 35.0% (2.16 vs. 1.60 in 2007) with all groups experiencing more incidents in 2008 than in 2007.

SunCoke Energy
SunCoke Energy’s overall OSHA recordable incident rate declined to 1.85 from 1.94 in 2007, with the following strong performances:

  • The Jewell Coal facility achieved an OSHA recordable incident rate of 0.00, its fourth consecutive year at 0.00 and ninth consecutive below 1.0.
  • Jewell Coal MSHA recordable incident rate improved (1.04 vs. 3.98).
  • Jewell Coke operation’s OSHA recordable incident rate improved 51% (1.24 vs. 2.55).

Lost Time Performance
The OSHA DART Rate combines the number of cases involving restricted duty with the number of cases where the individual could not work – lost workday cases. Sunoco’s overall DART Rate for 2008 increased 12.3% compared with 2007 (0.82 vs. 0.73). This equates to ten more cases in 2008 than in 2007.

The increase occurred in the Retail Marketing sector (44.9%) as the other business units experienced the following improvements:

  • Refining & Supply – 36.4%
  • Chemicals – 1.1%
  • SunCoke Energy – 63.7%

Contractor Safety Performance 
The overall contractor safety performance rate (OSHA Recordable Incident Rate) improved 3.8% compared with 2007. Best-ever performance was experienced by Refining & Supply and SunCoke Energy, with 24.0% and 58.6% improvement respectively.

Safety Awards for SunCoke
During 2008, four SunCoke Energy facilities were recognized for their outstanding 2007 safety performance. The Dominion Central Shop, Dominion No. 22 & Dominion No. 30 underground mines, and the Jewell Smokeless Coal No. 2 Preparation Plant received Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy (DMME) Safety Awards. The awards are based on a zero lost time incident rate and the number of hours worked. 

The awards were:

  • DMME Award – 1st Place Small Surface Category – Dominion Central Shop
  • DMME Award – 1st Place Small Underground Mine Category – Dominion No. 22
  • DMME Award – 2nd Place Small Underground Mine Category - Dominion No. 30
  • DMME Award – 4th Place Large Surface Mine Category – No. 2 Preparation Plant
