Conservation Efforts
Recycling programs at Sunoco plants involve a variety of materials and items. Examples of recycling programs include:

Sunoco also repairs/recycles valves instead of replacing them. During 2004, three refineries repaired/recycled 168 valves. Additionally, Sunoco sells used valves, computer equipment, etc. to certified third-party firms who re-condition the equipment and resell it.

Materials Accounting
Due to the nature of the refining process, Sunoco utilizes materials accounting on a selective basis. Typically this occurs where chemical additives are utilized. Examples of materials accounting in refining include monitoring the:

  • Amount of catalyst used in the refinery processes;
  • Quantities of gasoline additives used; and
  • Use of water treatment chemicals.

Sunoco Sponsors MET Banquet
Pam Hubbard, Senior Environmental Engineer Specialist – Tulsa Refinery, (center) receives a certificate of recognition on behalf of Sunoco from Ana Stagg, Public Works Director for Owasso and M.e.t. Board Chair and the Honorable Mayor Bill LaFortune.
Sunoco sponsored the 2005 America Recycles Day Banquet hosted by the Tulsa Metropolitan Environmental Trust in November. The Metropolitan Environmental Trust coordinates and promotes recycling and environmental events in the metropolitan Tulsa area including Broken Arrow, Jenks, Glenpool, Sand Springs, Claremore, Collinsville, Owasso, and Bixby. The M.E.T. operates 11 recycling centers and conducts environmental events throughout the year to encourage, educate and facilitate recycling.

Computer Handling
Sunoco contracts with a company to recycle computers and related equipment. The recycling must be done according to EPA guidelines, including thoroughly scrubbing the equipment (i.e., removing any data).
