Founded in 1866 and owned by Sunoco since 1988, the Philadelphia Facility is the largest of the three refineries in the Northeast Refining group. The facility covers an area of about 1,400 acres and employs over 1,200 workers. The Operating and Maintenance employees are represented by the United Steelworkers Union. The refinery can process 340,000 barrels a day of crude oil, primarily from the North Sea and West Africa.

The refinery produces gasoline, diesel fuel, home heating oil and aviation fuel, plus heavy fuel oil used to fire boilers on ocean going vessels and large power generation plants, propane and butane. In addition, the facility produces a petrochemical feedstock, cumene, which is shipped to Sunoco's Frankford Chemicals plant to make phenol, used in the manufacture of plastics and synthetics. The refinery operates around the clock every day of the year. We safely store more than 700 million gallons of product in tanks and other vessels. The facility has thousands of miles of pipelines to move products, steam, water, gases and liquids throughout the plant.

The refinery is capable of making 6,700,000 gallons/day of gasoline – enough to fill 445,000 cars daily, and home heating oil at 798,000 gallons/day - enough to heat 115,000 homes daily.
