Sunoco's health and safety performance in 2005 continued to be very good. The OSHA recordable injury rate for the refineries improved 36% for the second year in a row. All five refineries had OSHA recordable incident rates of 0.90 or below.

Overall, the safety performance at the chemical plants declined (an OSHA recordable rate of 1.11 in 2005 compared with a 0.61 in 2004). However, performance improved at three plants and two of these plants completed the year without an OSHA recordable incident.

Retail Marketing achieved a 41.6% improvement in its safety performance with an OSHA recordable incident rate of 1.70 compared with 2.91 in 2004. Improvement was seen in both Retail Heating (Home Comfort Services) and Co-Ops (convenience stores) as they had 33.7% and 41.6% improvements, respectively.

The Refining & Supply business unit lowered its OSHA recordable rate from 0.77 in 2004 to 0.60 in 2005, a 22.1% improvement. As shown below, all five refineries had OSHA recordable rates of 0.90 or below.
