Workplace Safety Overview
Maintaining safe operations is key to achieving Sunoco's HES excellence goals. Solid performance in this area is critical. Our challenge is to maintain and improve our standard of performance by continuing to integrate management systems into our "day to day" programs.

Safety performance was very good for both the company and for numerous plants and facilities. As a company Sunoco had its best overall safety performance in 2005 with a 33.7% improvement, when compared with 2004 (an OSHA recordable rate of 1.28 in 2005 compared with 1.93 in 2004). Solid performances were also seen in the Retail Marketing and Refining & Supply business units where improvements of 41.6% and 22.1%, respectively, were realized.

Three refineries and three chemical plants improved their safety performances compared with 2004, including one chemical plant completing the year without an OSHA recordable injury. We experienced three major fires, but this halted the previous trend of this number increasing over the past three years.

To sustain this trend of improved safety performance we are conducting audits (both facility self-assessments and corporate audits), fire prevention assessments, training, and working with our contractors in an effort to eliminate injuries, fires and other incidents.
