Maintaining safe operations is key to achieving Sunoco's HES excellence goals. Solid performance in this area is critical. With the sustained improvement of the past three years, our challenge is to maintain this excellent performance. Numerous large capital projects are scheduled for many of our facilities, including some locations where there could be over 1,000 contractors onsite on any given day. It will be imperative that safety awareness be maintained at the highest possible level.
Maintaining the highest possible level of employees awareness and focus is key, along with continually revising safety messages to keep them fresh. Our employees and contractors do an excellent job of maintaining focus when engaged in projects and carrying out specific procedures. It is the non-intense, every day situations where maintaining focus can be a challenge.
Sunoco once again experienced its best safety performance and several plants and facilities had excellent performances. As a company, we reduced our OSHA recordable incident rate by 16.4% from 2005. This strong performance was based on improved performance in all four business units. To sustain this trend of improved safety performance, we are conducting audits (both facility self-assessments and corporate audits), fire prevention assessments, insurance inspections, training, and working with our contractors in an effort to eliminate injuries, fires and other incidents. |
