Conservation Efforts
Programs at Sunoco plants involve a variety of materials and items. Examples of recycling programs include:
  • Regenerating spent catalyst;
  • Recycling spent caustic and other materials;
  • Repairing/recycling valves instead of replacing them; and
  • Recycling spent catalyst fines.

Additionally, Sunoco sells used valves, computer equipment, etc. to certified third-party firms who re-condition the equipment and resell it.

Due to the nature of the refining process, Sunoco utilizes materials accounting on a selective basis. Materials accounting typically occurs where chemical additives are utilized. Examples of materials accounting in refining include monitoring the:

  • Amount of catalyst used in the refinery processes;
  • Quantities of gasoline additives used; and
  • Use of water treatment chemicals.
Recycling Programs
Recycling efforts include:
  • The refineries utilize a soil reuse program enabling soil generated from excavation activities to be reused. Approximately 6,036 tons of soil were reused during 2008.
  • Sunoco contracts with a company to recycle computers and related equipment. The recycling must be done according to EPA guidelines, including thoroughly scrubbing the equipment (i.e., removing any data). A certification is received from the EPA indicating, by serial number, that the equipment has been disposed of properly.
