The refinery’s Honorable Mention award was based on its well redevelopment project that is part of its activities aimed at recovering subsurface light non-aqueous phase liquids (LNAPLs) that had accumulated over the refinery’s 100-plus years of operation. Through chemical treatment and other methods, the wells were cleared of sediment, scale, and iron bacteria thereby increasing the recovery rates. Redeveloping the wells also protects the environment by reducing the need to drill additional wells.
