Groundbreaking on ReVAP™ A groundbreaking ceremony was held at the Philadelphia Refinery on May 27, 2008, for the HF Alkylation Process Improvement Project. The project, slated for completion in early 2010, will cost an estimated $137 million and will incorporate the UOP-developed ReVAP™ technology and will require substantial improvements and modifications to the alkylation unit and supporting utility systems. ReVAP™ technology is a licensed technology designed to further protect public health if a release were to occur.
Hydrogen Fluoride (HF) is a catalyst used in the production of materials used in everyday lives. Stainless steel, fire extinguishing materials, plastics, aluminum products, and automotive cleaners all require HF in some form. Sunoco uses HF to produce a high octane gasoline component called alkylate which is blended into fuel for today’s automobile engines. This process is called alkylation.
HF has been used and stored safely at the Sunoco Philadelphia Refinery for more than 30 years, and various safety-related enhancements have been made through the years. Sunoco has studied the ReVAP™ technology since it was first developed. Recent improvements in the seals used by the technology enabled Sunoco to conclude that the technology can fit well with the refinery’s operating system while providing an additional layer of safety. |
