Greenhouse Gases (GHG) As discussed in the energy conservation section, Sunoco uses the SANGEA™ software tool to measure energy usage and calculate greenhouse gas emissions. Greenhouse gas emissions are expressed in terms of CO2 equivalents (CO2e). Consistent with U.S. Department of Energy guidelines, the CO2e amounts include any emissions by outside providers of energy consumed by Sunoco facilities. GHG emissions for the refineries and chemical plants increased 2.43% compared with 2007, and were 10.73% lower than the 1990 base year. These results reflect energy usage at Sunoco's refineries and chemical plants. And as mentioned in the energy conservation section, included are the increased energy usage and greenhouse gases associated with three new Low Sulfur Diesel projects online during 2006. During 2007, Sunoco reviewed and enhanced its GHG inventory. This enabled the inclusion of the SunCoke Energy cokemaking facilities, Marketing (retail stores, home heating oil subsidiaries, gasoline transport trucks, etc.) and the Professional Services Group (i.e., headquarters operations). Data for these groups were developed for 2006, 2007 and 2008. They are not included in the 1990 baseline year.
