Fire Protection
Sunoco refined its efforts for addressing fire protection and prevention by adjusting its focus from being a prescriptive and requirement driven method to a risk-based philosophy. This approach uses Sunoco’s new Risk Assessment Philosophy Standard as the basis for acceptable risk levels.

The change was accomplished by significantly modifying the following three of our fire protection standards:

  • Standard for the Construction and Fire Protection of Marine Terminals, Piers and Wharves
  • Refinery Fire Protection;Fire Protection for Atmospheric Storage Tanks
  • Fire Protection for LPG Vessels

By taking this step, the Fire Protection and Prevention program is now closely aligned with our Process Safety Management Program and provides a cohesive and consistent approach to company risk management.

Other fire protection and prevention efforts in 2008 focused on:

  • Development of additional standards
    • Emergency Equipment and Maintenance
    • Emergency Response Team Requirements
    • Shelter-In-Place
  • Providing “High Complexity Plan Reviews” for 22 new engineering projects
  • Fire pump testing at Sunoco refining and chemical operations
  • Fire water flow testing at five refineries and four chemical plants
  • Completing detailed computer models for underground fire water system hydraulics at the Marcus Hook Refinery, Neal Plant and Haverhill Plant, with the rest of the facilities to follow in 2009
