| Sunoco's emergency responders train on a variety of situations so they are ready if their expertise is needed. | Fire prevention is a very high priority at Sunoco's facilities. There were three major fires (resulting in more than $250,000 property damage), breaking the three-year trend of increasing number of major fires and rising property damage costs. The property damages associated with major fires dropped from $11.5 million in 2004 to $6.1 million in 2005 (please see sidebar).
Sunoco's efforts to reduce and eliminate the risk of major fires targets equipment design, training, process safety management, and emergency preparedness. Our corporate-wide fire prevention program is continually reviewed and updated. Fire prevention efforts during 2005 were focused particularly on supporting the safe start-up of the clean fuels projects (low sulfur gasoline) and completing the annual fire equipment test and assessment program.
Future initiatives for the Sunoco’s Fire Prevention & Protection staff include:
- Developing methods for fire risk identification and mitigation;
- Writing standards for fire protection system maintenance and service; and
- Completing engineering analysis models for facility fire water piping systems.
Insurance Update

The 2005 reduction in new claims consisted of decreases in worker compensation (31.2%) and general liability (11.5%). Auto liability claims increased slightly (5.9%).
