Environmental Management in Brazil
SunCoke Energy began operations at the Vitória, Brazil, cokemaking facility, known as SunCoke East, in 2007. Since that time the facility has implemented the System of Environmental Management designed to manage environmental risks, supply high quality products, respect the environment, value employees, provide customer satisfaction, promote sustainable use of resources, and create a safe work environment.

Besides developing important works directed to solid residues area, emissions, chemical products, natural resources and liquids effluent to minimize the direct impacts, SunEast also invested a tremendous effort in projects that benefit the society, contribute to employee awareness and reduce the indirect impacts of the plant. An example is the “Green Areas Project”, which promote actions inside SunCoke East’s plant.

  • Tree Planting Project
Beginning in 2007 and continued through 2008, a major focus was the preservation of natural resources by reducing impacts caused by particulate emissions and viability of a favorable environment for maintaining and development of local fauna. The Project encompassed an area equivalent to 27.2% of total plant area.
  • Landscape Project
Concluded in 2008, the Landscape Project diversified the flora and improved the aesthetic environment inside the facility. Trees were chosen based on their adaption to the local climate and for creating a warm and harmonic space.

The Tree Day celebration consolidated both projects as Ipês seedlings, an Atlantic forest native species, were planted by employees. The goal was to involve employees to demonstrate the importance of developing and maintaining a healthful work environment. The next stage will be to plant Eucalipto seedling around Arcelor Mittal Tubarão.
