Commitment from employees and management are key to achieving positive safety performance. All Sunoco employees are expected and encouraged to take the initiative to either help resolve an issue, correct the situation or notify appropriate personnel so the issue can be resolved.

Below are some examples of employee participation and safety efforts that Sunoco undertook during 2008:

Good Catch Program
For the Toledo Refinery Consent Decree Project, a large-scale construction project utilizing numerous contractors, management team wanted a means for improving/encouraging the reporting of “near-misses”. The goal was to turn the negative connotation of “near-miss” to a positive of preventing accidents, eliminating hazards and getting the workforce engaged in the resolution process.

In late 2007, the Good Catch Program was created and implemented. Through the program, employees are encouraged to document unsafe acts or conditions they either witnessed or were involved with, and document the corrective action taken. Their Foreman signs off on the Good Catch Card and deposits it in a collection box.

The Safety Organization reviews each card to ensure no further action is required and to look for trends. The best catches are then reviewed at safety meetings the following week. Personnel who submitted the best catches are rewarded with Sunoco Gas Cards and a hard hat sticker. Good Catch Cards are compiled monthly and entered in the monthly drawing for a $200.00 American Express card. Since the program's start, over 4,598 good catches have been submitted on the Consent Decree Project preventing a number of potential incidents.

Safety Rep Training
Twenty-eight hourly safety representatives at the Toledo Refinery met for two days of training during the fall. The training topics ranged from refinery safety procedures, emergency response equipment, conducting safety meetings, to a review of major incidents/events that have occurred in the petroleum industry.

The purpose of the training was to provide the attendees with a strong working knowledge of safety procedures and techniques that they can use when fulfilling their roles as safety representatives in the refinery.
