CFC Usage
Sunoco refining and marketing facilities completed phase-out of CFC based refrigerants, R-11 and R -12, in 1998 and have no recorded use of either material in the 1999-2005 period. Sunoco Chemicals used 1,200 pounds of R-11 in process chillers at the Frankford Plant in 2005. This is a significant reduction from the 6,400 pounds of usage of the previous year (but still three times the 2003 usage).

Year Use Emissions
1990 150,000 150,000
2003 400 400
2004 6,400 6,400
2005 1,200 1,200

Greenhouse Gases (GHG)
As discussed in the energy conservation section Sunoco uses the SANGEATM software tool to measure energy usage and calculate greenhouse gas emissions. The greenhouse gas emissions are expressed in terms of CO2 equivalents (CO2e). Consistent with U.S. Department of Energy guidelines, the CO2e amounts include any emissions by outside providers of energy consumed by Sunoco facilities. Overall, GHG emissions remained the same (increased 0.1%) compared with 2004, and were 9.7% lower than the 1990 base year. These results reflect energy usage at Sunoco's refineries and chemical plants. And as mentioned in the energy conservation section, included are the increased energy usage and greenhouse gases associated with bringing four new Low Sulfur Gas process units online during 2005. Criteria Air Pollutants
Sunoco's refineries and chemical plants are the primary sources of criteria air pollutant emissions. The latest year for which data are available is 2004. Overall, criteria air pollutant emissions decreased 7.2% in 2004. The decreases were in sulfur dioxide (8.9%), nitrogen oxides (2.3%), and particulate matter (6.4%) emissions. Increases in 2004, when compared with 2003, were carbon monoxide (5.3%), and volatile organic compound (10.0%) emissions. (Note: Lead is zero in each reporting year).

When normalized based on production, refining criteria air pollutant emissions decreased from 0.13 tons to 0.12 tons (7.7%). Chemicals increased from 0.56 tons in 2003 to 0.63 tons (12.5%) in 2004.
