Emergency Preparations
Sunoco personnel keep local emergency response organizations informed about potential risks through periodic meetings, Local Emergency Planning Committee involvement, and other outreach programs. Additionally, each year Sunoco's refineries, chemical plants and various other locations initiate, coordinate and participate in both internal and external emergency response drills and activities.

A plant tour was provided for firemen attending the Frankford Plant orientation sessions.
City of Tulsa firefighters got to practice on live training fires at the Tulsa Refinery
The Toledo Refinery's Emergency Response Team was named "Best Overall Fire Unit" at the "Rally by the Rails" festival on May 21, 2005
Local volunteer firefighters learn about industrial fires and how to put them out safely.
Emergency response team members must participate in annual refresher training that includes selecting and wearing the proper personal protective equipment.
Examples of the training and emergency response activities that took place during 2005 are:

Frankford Plant Annual Tour
Each year the Frankford Plant hosts the City of Philadelphia Fire Department’s 10th Battalion for a plant tour.  Four sessions are held as the battalion comprises approximately 240 firefighters. Each session consisted of a plant-specific safety review, a process overview, and a presentation on the facility’s fire fighting systems and emergency response capabilities.

Tulsa Refinery Holds Training Sessions
On November 28th and 29th, 2005, emergency response personnel from the Tulsa Refinery conducted a fire school on flammable liquid fires for the City of Tulsa Fire Department’s cadet class. The class consisted of thirty-five rookies and three training officers.

The students trained on the different types of hand-held extinguishers and were instructed how to put out a pump seal fire utilizing a dry chemical extinguisher. Instruction also was given on the proper method of fighting fires at loading racks and storage tanks. Fires were lit on training facilities and the students had to use water and firefighting foam to control and extinguish the flammable liquid fires, which consisted of gasoline and diesel fuel.

Police Officers on Tour
Approximately 100 police officers got a firsthand look at the Toledo Refinery. The tours were held on Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings to accommodate the officers. The tours were suggested by an officer who toured the refinery with the Neighbor Task Force. The officers were also provided with important safety information such as who the refinery’s emergency contacts are, the types of chemicals onsite, and routes for evacuation.

Eagle Point Welcomes Local Firefighters
The Eagle Point Refinery welcomed over 60 volunteer firefighters from four West Deptford, NJ fire companies. The occasion was the second annual training exercise known as “Night Burn”. The attendees participated in classroom and field training. The 8-hour training takes place over two nights and includes fighting live fires in a controlled setting.

Training to Respond
A Hazardous Materials Technician training course was held for emergency response personnel at the Marcus Hook, Philadelphia, and Eagle Point refineries. The three-day course was led by two Sunoco employees who are both nationally certified instructors. The course teaches first responders how to choose the proper personal protective equipment (PPE), identify problems, test the atmosphere, make repairs, and follow the Incident Command system.
