Product Stewardship
Sunoco's product stewardship efforts include tracking and addressing various regulations and initiatives, along with providing product stewardship knowledge and training to employees, customers, and other organizations, such as emergency response personnel, as appropriate.
Some examples of these efforts during 2008 were:
MSDS Distribution OSHA’s Hazard Communications regulation requires manufacturers to provide Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) containing pertinent physical and handling data for the substance. Sunoco is moving to electronic distribution of MSDSs, but most of our customers still prefer to receive hard copies by mail. In 2008, Sunoco mailed over 14,000 MSDSs, requiring almost 150,000 sheets of paper. By year-end, the Product Safety group, with assistance from the Information Technology group, had implemented two-sided printing of the MSDSs.
In 2009, Sunoco expects to reduce paper consumption for MSDSs by approximately 40%. Additionally, we continue to survey our customers to determine if we can increase our electronic distribution of our MSDSs. Priority Risk Reviews and Risk Control Assessment Sunoco implemented a web-based system in 2006 to manage the on-going evaluation of products, process streams and purchased materials for specific risk factors and control measures in the Refining & Supply (R&S) business unit. Since that time, R&S has completed over 500 risk reviews.
In 2008, R&S personnel and members of the Product Stewardship Forum collaborated to incorporate the risk review process into the existing electronic Chemical Approval Process (CAPNET). This streamlined the risk review process and ensured that a risk review was initiated with each new chemical material brought into an R&S facility.
Also in 2008, this risk review process was implemented in both the Chemicals’ and Branded Marketing business units. Review of Refinery Process Streams The Refinery Process Stream Review project completed the second year of its scheduled three-year term. Teams composed of process engineers, industrial hygienists and product safety representatives identified intermediate streams and validated their composition and physical properties.
A hazard determination was then completed for each stream and MSDSs updated, as appropriate. Once the project is completed, the composition and physical properties for almost 500 streams will have been validated.
