Business Continuity
During 2007, Sunoco revamped its corporate Crisis Management Response Plan. This updated plan clarifies the role of the Executive Team, creates a corporate incident support team, and documents the communication processes required for incident notification and interaction between the teams. This process, was developed by a multi-disciplinary group from the business units and the professional services group. Training of the teams has been completed, and a series of drills and exercises are scheduled for 2008.

This Crisis Management process is supported by our automated notification system, the Sunoco Employee Emergency Notification System (see below), and has been designed to improve out ability to respond to a broad range of incidents affecting Sunoco, for example:

  • Injuries or damage to company facilities
  • Environmental incidents
  • Loss of company offices or important infrastructure
  • Events leading to negative media exposure
  • Business disruptions

Communicating for Continuity
To support the Corporate Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery plan, Sunoco has a state-of-the-art emergency communication system. Its initial role was to facilitate emergency communications to and from headquarters personnel in the event of a catastrophic situation affecting the Philadelphia headquarters offices, but was extended to several facilities for use in emergency response team notification.

The computer-based system, when activated, contacts designated personnel through telephone, cell phone, email, and pagers. The system will continually attempt contact until the individual is reached and provides the personnel with a message concerning what action the individual is to take. Additionally, the system provides an easy method of quickly teleconferencing personnel enabling key information to be exchanged and discussed during an event.

Pandemic Task Force
The Federal government and various news outlets have reported on the possibility of an influenza (flu) pandemic in the United States. A pandemic is a global outbreak of a disease, in this case influenza, causing serious illness, and then spreads easily from person to person worldwide. Currently, the flu strain of concern is H5N1. Scientists believe this strain of avian influenza could mutate and become easily transmittable by humans.

Sunoco established a Pandemic/Flu Task Force in 2006 to monitor information from various government and media sources and to prepare the company should a pandemic become imminent. The role of the task force is to:

  • Develop plans and practices to teach employees and their families how to protect themselves from a pandemic flu
  • Guide the company’s business units as they develop pandemic plans that will ensure continuity of critical operations when faced with potential high absenteeism
  • Assist in managing Sunoco’s response should a pandemic occur

The task force communicates with employees to provide updates on any changes in company policies and information regarding a possible pandemic.
