Crisis Management/Business Continuity
Sunoco’s Crisis Management Plan underwent several revisions during 2009, including a new design that expresses the importance of communications, planning, execution and recovery measures when mitigating a crisis event.  The Plan’s revisions include:

  • Improved incident notification and reporting processes;
  • Crisis Team Membership changes; and,
  • Inclusion of exercise components.

Additionally, work was completed to begin a new foundation for future changes relevant to our Business Continuity Plan that will be consistent with industry and government guidance.

Membership of the Company Contingency Personnel and Contingency Managers was reviewed to ensure coverage for executing critical business operations during unplanned business interruptions (i.e., a crisis event, potential pandemic outbreak, etc.). Processes were established to ensure Contingency Personnel have:

  • Laptop computers;
  • Remote computer connections; and,
  • Computer applications enabling them to continue their work around critical business operations while working at home or alternate business locations during a business interruption event.

Additionally, a Company Critical Services Provider List was established identifying distributors, suppliers and contractors considered essential to support facilities during a potential crisis event.

The company’s Crisis Management website received a facelift and established portals that provide information to both the general employees and restricted access sites for Crisis and/or Facility Management Teams to use during an emergency event.  The web site contains:

  • Controlled documents;
  • Contingency Personnel and Critical Service Provider Listings;
  • Office Building Emergency Plans and Floor Warden Lists;
  • Resource tools for internal and external communications;
  • Employee Occupancy Reports;
  • Crisis Bulletins; and,
  • Facility Imagery and Facility Plot Plans.

Pandemic Task Force
In April 2009, the novel H1N1 virus (referred to as "swine flu") emerged in the United States and other countries.  Sunoco immediately began taking a proactive posture to formulate a strategic plan to review, update and implement new measures relevant to the Company’s pandemic influenza planning efforts.

A severe pandemic influenza outbreak presents a tremendous challenge in today’s society as it may affect the lives of our employees, their families and the Company’s economic and operational stability.  In the event of an influenza pandemic outbreak, the main focus of the Company is to minimize risks to employee health and welfare in the workplace while maintaining critical business functions and business continuity to minimize supply and chain disruptions.

The company formed a Pandemic Planning Team with representatives from the Health & Safety, Human Resource, Media Relations, IT, and Legal areas. The team’s objectives were developed based upon guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

To ensure the Company is positioned to respond effectively to a pandemic outbreak, planning, response and recovery guidelines were developed to improve upon the Company's strategy to mitigate a potential outbreak threat.  The Plan contains guidance relevant to:

  • Managing workplace risks;
  • Reducing the spread of the virus;
  • Social distancing;
  • Workplace cleaning; and,
  • Managing workplace illnesses.

Additionally, guidance checklists were developed in alignment with business continuity concepts to identify steps that would be implemented at each defined pandemic level.

A Pandemic Response Policy was developed and is ready for implementation should pandemic influenza outbreak occur.  Effective communication methods and processes were established and implemented to communicate with our employees, critical service providers and contractors regarding the Company’s pandemic planning and preparedness measures.

The Pandemic Planning Team continues to monitor updates and guidance from various government, health profession and media resources so it will be prepared should a pandemic become imminent.
