Behavior Based Safety & POINTS For several years, the Sunoco Chemicals’ TCC facility has used two programs to help drive safety performance – POINTS and ROUTE.
POINTS is a safety recognition program whose primary objective is to raise safety awareness by recognizing high-level safety performance by individuals. Each employee earns points through personal involvement activities every 90 days. Additionally, the employees must complete two (ROUTE) observations during the 90-day time period. Qualifying employees receive a gift card.
ROUTE - Research Observations Using Teamwork – is a Behavior Based Safety Observation System initiative where teams conduct observations, both in labs and the offices. The team observes and rates personnel “safe” or “at-risk” in categories such as personal protective equipment use, body positioning, tool and equipment use, housekeeping/emergency readiness, forklift use, work focus and chemical use. Office personnel are rated for body positioning, work station and housekeeping/emergency readiness.
A new type of observation was introduced in 2008 involving TCC employees conducting observations away from work (at home, outside, during travel, etc.). This concept allowed for some different opportunities to perform observations. These observations were voluntary and the names of those observed were kept anonymous. |
