General
  • The La Porte Plant and Marcus Hook Refinery both received the Chairman's Award for Excellence in Health, Environment and Safety.
  • The company continued to include HES performance modifiers as part of the Success Sharing Program.
  • The Eagle Point Refinery received RC14001 Environmental Management Systems certification. All five Sunoco refineries and the Refining & Supply Headquarters are now RC14001 Environmental Management Systems certified.
  • The Chemicals Business Unit headquarters received Responsible Care Management System certification.
  • Sunoco announced an agreement with the U. S. EPA to implement environmental improvement projects at four of its refineries. Under the agreement, Sunoco will install state-of-the-art emission control technology, costing an estimated $275 million, over the next eight years.
Health, Environment and Safety (HES)
Environmental /Energy
  • The number of Class 1 and 2 spills (10 barrels or more) decreased 16.7% (20 versus 24 in 2004). The volume spilled went down from 7,097 barrels in 2004 to 1,673 barrels of which 78.5% (1,313 barrels) was recovered.
  • Wastewater permit exceedances decreased 54.1% from the company’s best ever performance in 2004.
  • Greenhouse gas emissions (CO2 equivalents) remained the same in 2005, but were 9.7% lower than the 1990 base year.
  • Aggregate energy consumption for the company increased 1.0% compared with 2004, but was 11.7% lower than the base year (1990).
  • Air permit exceedances decreased 41.6% with exceptional performance at four facilities.
  • Our toxic waste transfers off-site increased by 8.9% ('04 vs. '03 – latest available data) and the refinery wastes sent off-site were 54.4% less than the 1988 Toxic Release Inventory base year.
Health & Safety/Security
  • The company experienced its best OSHA recordable rate ever with a 1.28.
  • The refinery OSHA recordable incident rate was below 1.0 for the fourth consecutive year, but the chemical plants' OSHA recordable rate increased from 0.61 in 2004 to 1.11 in 2005.
  • The La Porte Plant achieved OSHA Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) “Star” status.
  • Retail Marketing improved their OSHA recordable rate by 41.5% compared with 2004 (1.70 vs. 2.91).
  • Contractors working at our refineries and chemical plants had OSHA recordable rates of 0.49 and 0.71, respectively (best ever performance for both).
Compliance Oversight
  • Sunoco's HES auditors completed 87 audits and assessments involving 66 different sites.
Social Impact
  • Sunoco continued to convene Community Advisory Panels/Committees at all our refineries and chemical plants.
  • Sunoco employees took part in various community outreach activities including educational programs, blood drives, clean-up days, etc.
Financial Results
